Deep Roots in Banff National Park
The story of skiing in Banff National Park is deeply intertwined with the history of Norquay. The park’s rich ski culture began in the early 1900s with the arrival of Swiss and Austrian mountain guides who brought their passion for skiing to the region. Ski pioneer Gus Johnson played a pivotal role in nurturing this burgeoning culture, constructing ski jumps and teaching local children the art of skiing.
Recognizing the need for a dedicated ski area, Johnson selected a prime location on Mount Norquay, situated 1,000 feet above the town of Banff. This choice marked the beginning of Norquay’s storied legacy in the world of skiing.
A Banff Classic and Proud of It
Norquay’s legacy is marked by several key milestones. Our first ski cabin was built in 1927, and in 1941, we introduced the first rope tow, setting the stage for future generations of skiers. The North American or “Big Chair,” operational since 1948, continues to offer stunning views of the Bow Valley, making it one of the oldest chairs in North America. Norquay’s commitment to ski racing is well established, with our first slalom courses set in 1929 and the North American Champions races held in 1937. Today, we proudly host numerous competitions each season, continuing our tradition of excellence in ski racing.
Bridging the Past with the Present
At Norquay, we celebrate our rich history while embracing the present. Our traditions are evident in events like the Annual Bruno Engler Ski Race, named in honor of the esteemed Banff-based mountain guide, photographer, ski instructor, stunt double, and filmmaker. Engler’s legacy lives on through this event, which embodies the spirit of adventure and camaraderie that defines Norquay.
Whether you’re a seasoned skier or new to the sport, Norquay offers an unforgettable experience steeped in history and tradition. Join us and become part of a legacy that has captivated winter enthusiasts for generations.
